Monday Market Briefing - 13th January 2025
January - March looks set to be a busy movement period for home markets, it must be said some of this is clearing a widespread national backlog of earlier purchases, meaning some spot markets are limited for space but this should ease as we move towards the spring months.
Farmers returned to the market after Christmas with good activity going on all week, sometimes this can create price pressure but infact prices held up pretty well, ending the week slightly higher helped by a welcome dip in currency. However, it does not feel like the market has momentum to take it significantly higher with old crop supply seeming plentiful everywhere and buyers confident they can acquire material whenever they need it.
Inevitably, the first phone calls to trade and move all grades in nearby months will go to those growers who we know are holding whatever is being bid for on the day. It’s an obvious point but if we don’t know you have it, we might miss you out, so this is a good time to start that conversation with your farm trader and make sure they know what you are potentially looking to do in due course.
Have a good week.
