Sustainable, Low Carbon and Net Zero Cereal Production

By harvest 2025 many processors/brands/retailers need low carbon cereals. With ambitions to reach Net Zero by 2040 the way cereals are traded today are going to change. Those who do not move towards these methods of production could become locked out.

Committing to these programmes with Bartholomews’ support will provide a licence to operare in the future.

Sustainable Farming

A broad title, sustainable farming or regenerative farming is in sight-line of most processors producing cereal products for human consumption and animal feeds. To market those, processors will require proof of regnerative practices and environmental compliance. Bartholomews can enable you to meet those requirements through the xarvio® Field Manager platform combined with the expertise of our agronomists who are fully qualified in the use of xarvio® Field Manager plus a unique range of environmental products.

The Journey to Low Carbon and Net Zero Emmissions through Avoidance and Sequestration

The journey to Net Zero Emmissions in farming starts with a low carbon fertislier. Currently artifical fertilisers are an essential part of modern agriculture. Without it, crop production levels would fall by up to 40%. At the same time, they are responsible for 50% of the Carbon footprint in crop production and due to fossil fuels being the main energy source in the manufacturing of conventional fertilisers, along with emission losses through field uses.

Green Fertiliser

We have an exclusive UK distribution agreement with Fertiberia on Impact Zero, the only green fertiliser being used commercially over the last 12 months in the UK.

Manufactured with green energy, Impact Zero also contains Nitrification Inhibitors which improves Nitrogen Use Efficiency in many cases by 20%.

Brands and retailers are already requiring cereals grown with green fertilisers along with agreed environmental interventions to reduce their scope three emissions.

Our Low Carbon Fertiliser Portfolio

To give our farmers all options available on the market, we an extensive portfolio of low carbon fertilisers.

  • Limus produced by BASF

  • Polysulphate produced by ICL

  • Biological N products

Our Low Carbon Fertiliser Range

We’d like to share with you the largest independent fertiliser trials conducted in the UK. Find our e-book below.

Net Zero

Net Zero cereal production can only be achieved by reducing emissions embedded within inputs and increasing carbon sequestrationin the soil. Implementing Interventions such as overwinter cover cropping and straw incorporation at harvest can increase soil sequestration. Whilst use of Nitrification Inhibitors, Green Ammonia fertilisers and precision technology to enhance efficiancy, can all increase emmissions avoidance.

Xarvio® Field Manager

A digital platform designed by BASF, xarvio® uses satelitte technology with which even historic data can be interpreted to empower precision farming and enhanced crop management. It records all field activities and interventions which combined with soil carbon counting within the system provides growers with verified and certified status of their crops field by field. Only xarvio® Field Manager growers can achieve Net Zero cereal status.

Our partnership with BASF extends to the xarvio® Field Manager, currently giving us and therefore our farmers exclusive usage right to the platform. To find out about how xarvio® can support your crop management and our specilased support to decrease overall emissions click the button below.
