Trials results

Over the past couple of years we’ve been running our winter wheat trial plots with Elicit. For comparison, KWS Basset is a group 3 wheat which has been on the AHDB list for several years.

As you can see in our trials video below from 2020, Elicit looked like a stronger choice for growers going forward, as Basset appeared to be breaking down to disease. This could be a common theme and consideration for future growing seasons.

Other than visual benefits, Elicit also benefits from a higher untreated yield compared to its Group 3 peers, although it did yield 4th out of the 5 Group 3 varieties on treated plots. However, Elicit came out on top for protein content at 11% in our trials.

The Grain Market view

In a recent article in partnership with Elsoms, Martin Perry (Senior Grain Trader) in our Grain Marketing team talks through the advantages of Elicit.

“The European market uses different testing methods such as the Chopin Alveograph to measure how varieties bake and perform as bread rather than analysing Hagberg, or specific weight as we do in the UK. The key to a varieties suitability is it’s extensibility as a dough. It is here that some UK Group 3 varieties, such as Elicit and Firefly, are very desirable for export into Iberian countries such as Portugal and Spain”

“Wheats with the right baking characteristics that may still draw a premium that exceeds any likely import levies. Even in 2020, following a difficult harvest of just 10M tonnes making the UK a net importer of wheat, remarkably there is still interest in Group 3’s such as Elicit and KWS Firefly for export. However, the key advantage for Elicit over Firefly is that we have 2 years of commercial data on it – against just 1 year of data on Firefly”
